A control system (12 fig 3) method 400 and computer program (31 fig 2A) are provided for controlling torque provided by a belt integrated starter generator BISG (14 fig 1) of a vehicle (10 fig 1). The control system (12) comprises one or more electronic controllers (18 fig 2A) which determine a change in torque to be provided by the BISG (14) according to a torque request (54 fig 5), determine that the torque change will cause the BISG (14) to enter a torque reversal region (51 fig 5), and output to the BISG (14) an altered torque request (56 fig 5) within the torque reversal region (51), when the torque request (54) would result in a reduction or increase in the amount of torque provided by the BISG (14). The invention is aimed at reduced oscillations and noise which may be related to belt tension and at providing improved drivability in situations such as torque overrun in a hybrid electric vehicle.
