A control system for a vehicle, the control system comprises one or more controllers. The control system is configured to: receive a diagnostic command comprising a diagnostic parameter; validate the diagnostic command by comparing the diagnostic parameter with a validation parameter stored in a database 22; and initiate a diagnostic function in accordance with the received diagnostic command if the diagnostic command is validated. All the validation parameters may be stored in the database, allowing efficient use of memory and easy checking and updating of the parameters. The validation parameters may relate to parameters of vehicle applications upon which the diagnostics function is performed. The control system may comprise virtual machines which host the vehicle applications, and the diagnostic database may contain validation parameters relating to applications across the virtual machines. In a different embodiment, the database may be hosted on one of the virtual machines. The virtual machine hosting the database may comprise a diagnostics module 20 which receives the diagnostic command from diagnostics tool 14 and initiates the diagnostic function, if validated. The validation parameters may be loaded from an SQL file to the database when the control system is powered on.
