A filtration system 10 comprises: a floatation body 12 configured to float on liquid 14, e.g. water; a filtration module 16 coupled for movement with the floatation body, wherein the filtration module is configured to isolate metal ions present in liquid; a filtration pump 18 coupled for movement with the floatation body and configured to convey liquid to the filtration module; and a power system coupled for movement with the floatation body and configured to power the filtration pump. The filtration system includes an inlet arrangement 22 for collecting liquid to be conveyed to the filtration module, wherein the inlet arrangement is configured for receiving liquid from a depth below the floatation body. By coupling the filtration module and pump to the floatation body for movement with the floatation body, it is possible to isolate metal ions from a body of liquid on which the floatation body is disposed, without having to pump liquid to an onshore apparatus for filtering. Preferably, the filtration module comprises a metal organic framework configured to separate lithium from the liquid, e.g. seawater. The power system can comprise one or more solar panels (154, Fig. 2) or one or more wind turbines (266, Fig. 4).
