Electrical vehicle charger comprising a normally live input line 12b and normally neutral input line 13b that connects a power grid 10 to vehicle charging circuitry (main power stage) 19, 20 via a configurable switching stage (15, 16, Fig. 2&3), 33, 34. The switching stage can selectively connect the first or second input lines to the first and first and second charging terminals 19, 20. The input terminals (lines) may be formed in a plug. The configurable switching stage may comprise relay switches that can connect the first or second input lines to the first and first and second charging terminals. The vehicle charger may comprise a voltage sensor 14 to detect voltage the input lines. When the voltage sensor detects that the plug is connected the correct way, relay command interface 21 closes switches (15 and 16, Fig. 2) and opens switches 33, 34. When the plug is inserted the wrong way, switches (15 and 16, Fig. 2) may be opened and switches 33, 34 closed. This ensures that the correct polarity is output to the charger.
