An electrical power supply system has a DC distribution bus (10); a rechargeable battery module (24) which delivers power to the bus (10) in a discharge mode, and absorbs power in a recharge mode; a DC/DC converter (26) connected between the bus and the battery comprising an inductor (L) and plural switches and heat transfer means between the converter (26) and the battery (24). The battery (24) has an idling mode in which it neither delivers power to nor absorbs power from the bus (10). In this mode, the converter is switchable between a ramping-up configuration of the switches where a current is withdrawn from a source (one of the bus or battery), flows through the inductor (L) and is returned to said source, and a freewheeling configuration in which the current from the ramping-up configuration is isolated from said source to flow in a loop within the converter. A controller controls the repeated switching between the configurations such that, in the idling mode, heat resulting from the repeated switching and the current flow produced thereby in the converter (26) is transferred by the heat transfer means from the converter to heat the rechargeable battery module (24).
