The invention relates to a method and apparatus for operating a track-bound vehicle 10 comprising; coupling at least a first movable energy storage unit 16 to said vehicle and propelling the vehicle at least partially based on electrical energy provided by said first movable energy storage unit 16; exchanging the first movable energy storage unit 16 with a second movable energy storage unit 16 that has been charged at least to a minimum threshold level; and propelling the vehicle at least partially based on the electrical energy provided by the second movable energy storage unit 16. Additionally disclosed, each movable energy storage unit 16 comprises an electrical energy storage 22 that provides electrical energy to the vehicle, and a set of wheels 24 configured to run on the same tracks 14 as the track bound vehicle. The movable energy storage unit 16 is additionally configured to be coupled to and at least partially received in a carriage 12 of a train unit 10.
