A bearing unit 12 for an aircraft landing gear wheel 10 is provided. The bearing unit 12 includes an outer surface for receiving an aircraft landing gear wheel 10 and an inner surface for receiving an axle 14. The unit 12 comprises first and second spaced-apart sets 18a, 18b of tapered roller bearings, held between inner and outer raceways 20, 22. There is also a bearing setting spacer 52 which can be used when setting and pre-loading the bearings 18a, 18b. The bearing unit 12 is a sealed unit which includes a pre-set amount of lubricant (e.g. grease 50, Figure 5) for lubricating the bearings 18a, 18b. One or more sensors (56, 58, Figure 7) may be retained in a void 54 between the sets of bearings 18a, 18b. The bearing unit 12 remains fixed to the axle 14 when the wheel (and optionally brake packs 28) are removed. The bearing unit 12 may be serviced less frequently than the wheels 10; and may thus have a longer lifetime.
