A braking apparatus 1 for a vehicle comprising a pedal 2 connected to a master hydraulic cylinder 5 via a primary linkage 3 such that depressing the pedal 2 compresses the master cylinder 5, and a secondary hydraulic cylinder 6 which, when controlled to extend from rest position to extended position, acts on the primary linkage 3 to compress the master cylinder. The second cylinder 6 may be connected to linkage 3 by a secondary linkage 4 with a clevis pin 8 mounted through a linear slot 9 of the linkage 3. This allows independent actuation of the master cylinder using each of the two brake initiators. There may be a controller (20; fig. 2) to operate the second cylinder 6, for example using a solenoid (23; fig. 2), object detection sensor (21; fig. 2) and/or over-ride control. The configuration allows automatic braking to be retrofitted to a conventional pedal-operated braking linkage.
