A method for detecting trips of a vehicle comprising the steps of generating and receiving a seat occupancy status s702 from a seat sensor, receiving telematics data indicative of vehicle motion, determining if a trip has occurred based on seat and telematics data, and generating trip output data indicative of the trip. Preferably, a trip signal is set as active s710 if seat occupancy is greater than a first threshold time s706, and vehicle motion is greater than a second threshold time s708. A trip may be considered to have occurred if the trip signal is set from active to not active.
