A device 2 provides an alarm upon being submerged. The device 2 comprises: a buoyant member 4 having a first sound generator (28,fig.2); a plate 6 having an attaching means 18 for attaching the device 2 to a person; and a permeable membrane 8 with a water soluble adhesive coating (22,fig.1). The buoyant member 4 is releasably attached to the plate 6 via the permeable membrane 8 such that upon submerging the device, the buoyant member 4 is released, floats to a surface, and the first sound generator is arranged to be activated. The first sound generator may be activated by means of a reed switch. The buoyant member may have a first opening (34,fig.2) to allow generated sound to pass to the environment. The first opening may comprise a marinized membrane (38,fig.2). The device 2 may comprise two sound generators (128a & b, fig.4) and two openings (138a & b, fig.4) on opposing sides such that upon flotation, one opening always allows sound to pass to the ambient environment.
