A drive unit 1 for an electric vehicle, comprises outputs 2,3, two epicyclics 11,12, a motor 4 in a housing 20 having a motor driven output 6 and a bore 5 through its body 9 and a shaft 7 through the bore 5. The first 11 and second 12 epicyclic gears connect the outputs 2,3,6 and provide a differential between the first 2 and second 3 outputs, transmitting torque generated at the motor output 6 to the first 2 and second 3 outputs. In the first 11 and second 12 epicyclic gear sets, a ratio of the internal diameter of the annular gear 16, 21 to the diameter of the sun gear (13, 17 fig 1) is within 15% of the Golden Ratio 1.618. Typically, the sun 13 of the first epicyclic 11 is driven by the motor output 6 and the sun (17) of the second epicyclic 12 is driven by the annular gear 16 of the first epicyclic. Planet gears (14, 18 fig 1) and carriers (15,19 fig 1) are included. The invention provides a compact arrangement for torque vectoring.
