A mobile device 10 capable of autonomous travel comprises a drive means 12, 13, and an obstacle detecting and movement influencing system 15, 17, (16, Fig.2) having a pneumatic element 15 positioned in a forward direction of the device which is resiliently compressible on contact with an obstacle 20, and a control unit 18 to cause travel of the device to be arrested and subsequently resumed after a delay Preferably, the device may remain stationary for a predetermined amount of time, execute reverse travel and/or execute a bypass routine during the delay. The pneumatic element could be a buffer made of a resilient material, or an inflatable body. The front of the device could be a deflecting prow, with the pneumatic element extending across and either side of the prow crest. Pressure sensors, cameras, and potentiometers could be incorporated. Rate of change of the element internal pressure may be measured, or the inertia of an obstacle.
