A landing gear system 100 for an aircraft, comprising a landing gear 130 movable between extended and retracted positions. The landing gear comprises a position sensor 140 configured to detect an extendible strut 136 (e.g. shock absorber) position and output a signal indicative of the position. A landing gear controller 150 determine that the strut has extended, and the landing gear is in contact with the ground on the basis of the signal, and automatically causes performance of at least a portion of a procedure to move the landing gear from the extended to the retracted position. Preferably the performance is caused on at least one further criterion, e.g. predetermined time period or bogie pitch angle. The procedure portion may comprise opening landing gear bay door and retracting landing gear. The system may determine the aircraft is about to leave contact with the ground, retracting landing gear sooner after take-off.
