A train protection system comprises a first vehicle onboard device 107 mounted in a first vehicle 101 at a head of a train formation and a second vehicle onboard device 207 mounted in a second vehicle 201 at a rear end of the train formation; a transmission line 2 is configured to connect the onboard devices. The first vehicle onboard device includes a train integrity monitoring unit 151, which monitors for establishment or loss of train integrity of the train formation based on communication contents or a communication state of the transmission line 2. The integrity monitoring may be carried out by a fail-safe computation unit. The communication on the transmission line may use polling and error detection codes. A new train formation may be created by linking multiple trains together and recognising some carriages as being intermediate (i.e. no longer the head or end of the train). The train may be autonomous and receive instructions from the trackside.
