A railway trackside worker system 100 comprises a train approach detector 104; an alert device 102 including a transmitter 108; and a wearable device 112 including a receiver and warning device. The transmitter sends a signal to the wearable device if the detector does not detect an approaching train 106 – e.g. it stops sending periodic heartbeat signals 116 if an approaching train is detected. The warning device generates a warning by default which stops when the signal is received (e.g. after waiting for a configurable timeout period to expire). The wearable device may be Personal Protective Equipment eyewear for displaying a warning sign, safe working sign, low power warning or ‘outside coverage area’ warning via output unit (306, Fig.3). The glasses may transmit a response signal to the alert device which may inform a train driver or Network Management Centre if any warning device has not received the signal.
