A replaceable battery for an electric vehicle comprises a plurality of battery modules that are configured to form a multi-level inverter. The battery may have integrated power electronics. The battery modules R1-4, Y1-4, B1-4, may be connected in series to a motor 18, where each module switches on and off to output a series voltage 15, 16 to the motor (see fig. 4). The frequency and current of the outputted voltage is controlled as demanded by a vehicle control system 19. The power electronics also controls charging of the battery modules. A motor may be associated with each vehicle wheel (see fig. 5). Cell balancing circuitry may be provided. The battery may be charged by solar panels, and may use a maximum power point tracking algorithm (MPPT). The batteries may be charged by regenerative braking. Modules included in a string may provide redundancy in the event of module failure. The vehicle may be a car, van, HGV, airplane, ship or off-road vehicle.
