An aircraft assembly has a vortex generator having a flow surface which interrupts hot-air exhausted from an outlet and generates a flow vortex to reduce the temperature of the air flowing over an aircraft surface. Preferably, the exhaust outlet is from an engine pre-cooler and the aircraft surface to be protected is the upper wing cover. The outlet may be located on the engine pylon, with the vortex generator located downstream of the exhaust outlet, between the outlet and leading edge of the wing. The vortex generator may have a bistable state member, forming at least part of the flow surface, and formed from a shape memory alloy or bistable laminate, allowing it to be temperature actuated by the hot-air exhaust flow into an active state.
