A child restraint system for an aircraft has a mounting portion 2 for fitting to an aircraft seat backrest. A harness 4 is releasably attached to the mounting portion so that in a first mode of use a child is supported with their back against a rear side of the seats backrest to face a parent. Preferably, the mounting portion is an open bottomed sleeve 10 formed from elasticated side panels (fig.2,16) with adjustable straps (fig.2,18) interconnecting front (fig.5,12) and rear (fig.6,14) panels to facilitate fitment. Preferably, the harness has a pouch with a rear panel 30, side panels 32,24 with armholes 38, and a bottom panel 36. In use, the bottom panel extends between the child’s legs and couples to the side panels wrapped around the child’s torso. The harness may use straps (fig.3,42,44) and a buckle 52 to form a three or five-point harness. Preferably, zips 20,22 allow the harness to be attached at various heights. The system may be used in a second mode with the child supported with their back against a front side of the backrest, with the seats lap belt running through a sleeve 54.
