A method for determining a location of a vehicle driving on a track comprises obtaining a real-time image from a camera 100 on board the vehicle, deriving information from the camera image and comparing the derived information with a database 212 of stored image information, each piece of stored image information corresponding to a track segment. By finding a closest match between the camera image information with the stored image information, the location of the vehicle on the track segment can be determined. The vehicle may be a train or locomotive. The database 212 may be derived from similarly obtained camera images, where position information (such as obtained by GPS or GNSS) of the vehicle is associated with each camera image (video frame). Sequence SLAM may be used to pre-process the video feed. The method may further comprise storing statistics on the matching quality between stored and camera images, and replacing the stored image with the camera image in the database should the match quality drop below a threshold. The locations may be associated with a track map. This is claimed to allow higher spatial resolution than GPS location techniques.
