A charger for an electric vehicle capable of receiving data regarding the proposed future use of the vehicle over a period of time and of optimising the charging of the vehicle. The charging is optimised based on the proposed use of the vehicle with a view to reducing the cost of charging, reducing the electricity consumed and the life of the battery. The charger may be on-board or external to the vehicle. The data may be entered manually or automatically from another system, which may be on-board or external to the vehicle. The data may include such variables as journey schedule times, route or locations of destinations, vehicle weight and load, time stopped at destinations, power of charging units and timings of peak and off-peak electricity supplies. The charging unit may be capable of exporting the current schedule and preferably display the data.
