A child safety seat comprises internal bladder 110 at a sidewall 103 interior side, fluidly communicating through the sidewall with an external bladder 109 at a sidewall exterior side. In use, an impact against a decompressed external bladder 109 cases inflation of the compressed internal bladder 110. Preferably, the external airbag transfers fluid to initially compressed internal bladder, absorbing impact and cushioning the head and/or upper body of the occupant, mitigating free flight zones during a side impact collision, increasing ride down time, and allowing early loading onset. The inner bladder may push a headrest wing (106, figure 1) causing lateral movement of the headrest 105. The external bladder may be biased to a decompressed state by a concertina structure, and include a threaded connector for receipt by a sidewall opening (108). The external airbag (409, figure 3) may be hinged on a side wall and latched for collapsed stowage.
