An internal combustion engine (2, figure 3) has an internal combustion engine 100 including an engine block (110, figure 3), at least one cylinder 114, an air intake (120, figure 3) and an exhaust conduit (130, figure 3). An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system (140, figure 3) comprises a heat exchanger 150 for cooling recirculated exhaust gas which is removably integrated into the engine block. Also disclosed is a marine outboard motor which comprises such an EGR heat exchanger. In some embodiments the engine is a turbo-charged diesel engine, with two banks of cylinders (in a V configuration), each bank having its own EGR heat exchanger. In some embodiments, the heat exchanger is located within a cavity defined by a flange 1511, and the heat exchanger comprises a fixed part (1510, figure 5) integral to the engine block, and a removable part (1520, figure 10) which may be removed from the engine block.
