A collar 1 comprising an open-ended cylinder is provided on the nose 3 or wings of an aircraft to reduce or eliminate the sonic boom created by the aircraft. The collar may be retractable within the nose of the aircraft. When mounted on the wings, the collar may comprise only sections of a cylinder so as to form curved winglets having an effective diameter of the aircraft’s wingspan. A set of small collars perpendicular to the direction of the aircraft fuselage could be used along the wing edges, and the collars could overlap. A second fuselage skin could also be used with a collar on the aircraft nose. Instead of a collar, a circular sound wave could be generated ahead of the aircraft. Further, the wings could instead have a modified curvature or shape.
