Disclosed is a landing gear system controller 120 for controlling a landing gear system 100 of an aircraft. The controller is configured to receive a request to operate a non-landing gear system element of the aircraft, and to cause operation of at least part of the landing gear system of the aircraft during a take-off or landing procedure on the basis of the request. The non-landing gear system may be a main lift control surface, an aileron, an elevator, a rudder, a flap, a slat, a spoiler, an automatic landing system or an automatic braking system. The deployment of the landing gear may also depend on a predetermined condition such as a predetermined speed, altitude or rate of climb. The landing gear system may comprise a landing gear actuator 112, landing gear lock 113, landing gear bay door, landing gear bay door actuator 116 or a landing gear bay door lock 117. There is also claimed a method of controlling landing gear comprising receiving a request to operate a non-landing gear system and causing the operation of at least part of the landing gear system.
