A system for mounting a vehicle seat on a vehicle floor comprises a first unit 12 for affixing to the seat and a second unit 10 for affixing to the vehicle floor, the first and second units being connected together so as to be alterable between a locked (e.g. normal) configuration in which the position of the first unit is fixed in relation to the second unit, and a mobile (e.g. accident) configuration in which the first unit is movable relative to the second unit. The system further comprises decelerating means 10b such that when the system is in the mobile configuration, the decelerating means are arranged to reduce the velocity of the first unit in a direction away from the position of the first unit in the locked configuration. During a crash, collision or impact, the system may shift to the mobile configuration, wherein a controlled deceleration is applied to the seat and occupant torso, so as to reduce the abrupt deceleration of the head, reducing neck injury (e.g. whiplash) that would arise from an otherwise sudden fore or aft head movement. The decelerating means may comprise resiliently-deformable elements (e.g. spring or hydraulic damper), or obliquely angled portion 10b.
