An aircraft cabin blower system 100 has a transmission 110, receiving mechanical power from first part of a gas turbine engine (GTE) in the form of a first transmission input 114, and an electrical circuit having a first electrical machine 118, a second electrical machine 122, and a power management system (PMS) 124. The system operates in a blower mode with the transmission driving a cabin blower compressor 102; the first electrical machine receives mechanical power from a second part of the GTE and acts as a generator providing electrical power to the PMS which drives the second electrical machine as a motor providing a second transmission input 120. The first and second parts of the GTE may be shafts associated with fans or compressors. The transmission output speed may be determined by a relative difference between the power of the GTE and the second electrical machine. The system may operate in a starter mode, where the first and second electrical machines act as motors providing mechanical power to the GTE, to facilitate starting; the cabin blower compressor may also be operated as an expander, driving the transmission and providing mechanical power to the GTE.
