A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) flying machine for personal use includes a ducted fan 100 having an intake side and an outlet side, at least two co‑axial rotors 113a-d configured to contra-rotate about a fan axis X when driven in rotation. A primary drive source 130 is arranged substantially co-axially with the ducted fan and to the outlet side of the ducted fan. First and second thrust air ducts 151,152 are configured to split thrust from the primary ducting outlet 150 from the ducted fan into a pair of thrust streams. The two respective thrust streams are arranged at opposite respective sides of the primary drive source, the ducts being rotatable to direct motion of the machine. A number of configurations of secondary drive sources and alternative thrust sources are provided for improved safety. The machine also has a pair of wings 181,182 which may be pivotable such that they are ordinarily folded but can be deployed to a flying configuration so that the machine can undertake horizontal flight. The machine may also have horizontal and vertical stabilisers 194, 195.
