Landing gear controller, system and method for detecting failure of a landing gear uplock hook (40, fig 1a) , the controller is configured to detect an extension time for a landing gear, and if the detected time meets a predetermined criteria, a warning signal indicates potential failure of a landing gear uplock hook. The method of detecting failure of a landing gear uplock hook comprises moving a landing gear bay door from a closed to an open position 308; extending the landing gear from a retracted to an extended position 310; measuring an extension time 320; determining if the measured time meets a predefined criterion 330, and if the predefined criterion is met, provide a warning signal indicating potential failure of a landing gear uplock hook 340. A landing gear controller that is configured to delay extension of a landing gear, measure the time taken for the landing gear to reach an extended position, and comparing the time to a threshold time, and issue a warning if the measured time differs by a predetermined amount is also provided. Preferably the landing gear is defined as the two main landing gears of an aircraft which are configured to extend simultaneously.
