A control system is provided for a train having two pantographs P1, P4 raised for collecting power from an overhead line. The control system is configured to determine, relative to the direction of travel of the train, which of the two pantographs is the leading pantograph P1 and which is the trailing pantograph P4. The control system is further configured to issue command signals to the two pantographs to apply respective uplift forces to the overhead line, the commanded uplift force for the leading pantograph P1 being less than the commanded uplift force for the trailing pantograph P4 by a predetermined amount (e.g. 5%-40%). A train-mounted Train Management System (TMS) may be provided that recognises the configuration of the train, including a health status of each pantograph, and determines which pantographs are to be raised and which lowered and sets appropriate uplift forces for the raised pantographs. The two pantographs may be located on two coupled train units (locomotives), or may be part of the same train unit. The arrangement addresses the problem of fluctuation in uplift force at a trailing pantograph caused by a wire wave produced by a leading pantograph.
