A system for receiving input comprises a memory device, a three dimensional knob 200 configured to adjust a parameter, and one or more processors. One or more signals indicative of finger placement 206 on the three dimensional knob are received 702. A height associated with the one or more signals is determined 704. A gain associated with the parameter based on the height is determined 706. A signal indicative of an adjustment to the parameter is received 708. And an adjustment to the parameter based on the determined gain and the received signal is caused 710. An adjustment function upon which gain is in part determined may correlate gain with height. The adjustment function may specify an inverse linear or non-linear relationship between the height and the gain. An average height based on the placement of first and second fingers may be determined. In a further aspect the system may be implemented in an aerial vehicle.
