A method including identifying a destination lane 210 that is separated from the current lane 205a of a vehicle 101 by at least one intervening lane 205b. When a vehicle blind spot 145 extending across the destination lane is determined to be free of objects 230 an alert is provided, which may be a light (215a, fig.3) disposed around a blind spot mirror on a side mirror. A vehicle component may be actuated to move the vehicle to the destination lane and the alert may be stopped if an object enters the blind spot. If the blind spot is not free of objects further alerts may be provided on determining to accelerate, decelerate or maintain the vehicle trajectory until the blind spot is free of objects. A plurality of alerts may be given indicating whether a portion of the blind spot is free of objects.
