A vehicle user interface 100 includes a display for a plurality of menus. The vehicle user interface also includes a steering wheel 106 having a joystick 108, 110, and a gesture pad 112 having a plurality of available input gestures. The vehicle user interface also includes a processor for modifying the display responsive to input from the steering wheel joystick and gesture pad, wherein at least one input gesture is available for all displayed menus, and availability of at least one input gesture changes based on the menu displayed. The at least one gesture may be a three finger swipe, or a one finger transcription gesture. The at least one gesture based on the menu may comprise a two finger pinch gesture for zooming in and out of a map. The invention also relates to a non-transitory, computer readable medium, comprising instructions for executing the embodiment of the first inventive concept.
