A running gear (fig.1,14) for a rail vehicle (fig.1,10) has a primary suspension assembly (fig.1,30) between each axle box (fig.1,28) and a frame (fig.1,18), the suspension has a main spring 32, with a horizontal stiffness the same in transverse and longitudinal directions (fig.2,TT,LL), and an anisotropic interface assembly (fig.1,34) in series with the main spring such that the suspension assembly has substantially different transverse and longitudinal stiffnesss. The main spring assembly may have one or more helical springs which at least partially receive the anisotropic interface in their inner volume. The anisotropic interface assembly may have at least one resilient element 44 between an intermediate spring seat 40, receiving an end of the main spring, and a guiding structure 42. A guiding means 46,48 limits or suppresses at least two degrees of freedom of movement, such that the spring seat may only translationally move parallel to the longitudinal direction LL, and rotate about a transverse axis CC. The pitch axis CC is preferably located beyond an end of the main spring assembly. Preferably, the longitudinal stiffness of the primary suspension is such that wheel sets of the running gear may pivot about a vertical axis.
