An encapsulation device for encapsulating a transmission component 130 of an engine system 230 that comprises a housing member 110 configured to encapsulate the transmission component and define an air gap 430 in a volume between an outer surface of the transmission component and an inner surface of the encapsulation device. The housing member allows air flow through the air gap during operation of the engine system (510 fig. 5) and to retain a heated air layer around the encapsulated transmission component following engine system shutdown in use 400, 450, 460. The air gap can enable convective cooling of the transmission components during periods when the vehicle is driving and additionally allows heat dissipation to occur when the vehicle engine is switched off (solid and dashed lines in fig. 4 showing respective short and long-term heat transfer). The housing member may include air outlet ducts which can be pressure activated or may be actuated by a motor.
