An engine heat retention structure 130 comprising a thermal shell 130S is arranged to at least partially encapsulate an engine 121. The shell is in a spaced apart relationship with the engine to allow circulation of air between the shell and engine and comprises a substantially downwardly directed open skirt portion arranged to at least partially surround the engine. The skirt portion traps air within the shell but allows air to flow upwardly into or downwardly out from the heat retention structure. A plurality of substantially vertically stacked pivoted outlet vent flap elements 151F are situated above a lower edge of the skirt portion to allow air to flow out from the heat retention structure, arranged automatically to pivot upwardly from a closed condition to an open condition in response to pressurisation of the shell. A motor vehicle and method of heat retention are also claimed.
