Method and computer (36, Fig.3) programmed to: determine that a first vehicle and a second vehicle are platooning 34 without an intervening vehicle; receive a thermal image (525, fig.5) of a tire 40 of the first vehicle from the second vehicle; and navigate a route (540,555,560) for the first vehicle upon determining the thermal image exceeds a threshold. The threshold may be a maximum average temperature across a tyre width, or a maximum temperature difference between a shoulder 48 and a midpoint 52 along the tyre width. The surroundings may need to be dark and/or dry, with first and second vehicles travelling on a straight road, with the tyre at a plateau pressure. The computer may determine that the tyre needs replacing before completing an originally planned route (555, Fig.5). Also claimed is a computer programmed to identify an apparatus (60,62, Fig.4) having a thermographic camera (58) facing a tire of a vehicle; requesting a thermal image of the tyre from the apparatus; and navigating a route (540,555,560) for the vehicle upon determining the thermal image exceeds a threshold. The apparatus may be a drone 60.
