A method includes receiving data, from multiple sensors mounted to a first vehicle, regarding a second vehicle approaching from behind 402. A collision avoidance system determines a likelihood that the second vehicle will collide with the back of the first vehicle based on the received data 404. Open space near the first vehicle is identified and a best action to mitigate the collision is determined based on the open space. The open space may be in front of or to the side of the first vehicle and the best action may involve driving into these other lanes. The authority to do this may be based on the autonomy level of the first vehicle. The impending collision may be communicated to driver of the first vehicle or possibly to other vehicles or infrastructure via V2X communication systems.
