A method of controlling an actuator 16a,16b for positioning a movable aircraft component 12a,12b such as a variable area fan nozzle (VAFN) door or thrust reverse doors or flaps. The method comprises: connecting electrically a first component control channel 26a of a component controller 14 to an actuator 16a attached to the movable aircraft component 12a; connecting electrically a second component control channel 26b of the component controller 14 to the actuator 16a; detecting a position of the movable aircraft component 12a with a first position sensor 18a and a second position sensor 18b; and controlling the actuator 16a in response to the detected position of the movable aircraft component 12a. Controlling the actuator 16a comprises: controlling a first portion of the actuator 16a with the first component channel 26a in response to the position detected by the first position sensor 18a; and controlling a second portion of the actuator 16a with the second component channel 26b in response to the position detected by the second position sensor 18b. The first and second portion of each actuator 16a,16b may each comprise a motor (40a,40b figure 2) and a brake (44a,44b).
