The method extends the time available for an aircraft engine (fig.2,32,34) to cool down after landing and warm up prior to take off in an aircraft 40 with an electric taxi system (fig.2,36) by: determining a time required to sufficiently cool down or warm up the engine to prevent damage to engine components; after landing driving the aircraft with both the taxi and the engine at a reduced throttle; shutting off the engine after the cooldown period and using only the taxi to drive the aircraft to a parking location 42 then shutting down it off; upon departure using the taxi to drive to a warm up location 48, then driving the aircraft with the taxi and the engine at a throttle setting below idle thrust for the warm up time to a thrust location 50; and at the thrust location turning the taxi off and increasing the thrust of the engine. Preferably, bleed air from an auxiliary power unit is directed on rotating components (fig.1,22) of the engine, causing rotation and cooling the engines during the cooling down period. Components and software may be modified to promote even and symmetrical warming and cooling of engine components during the periods, which are preferably greater than 150 seconds.
