The fault detection system has a controller which, for at least one break during a braking event, receives information on the braking demand requested, the amount of torque reacted by the brake, wear condition of the brake, wheel speed of a wheel associated with the brake, and maximum brake temperature during the event; the controller calculates an expected maximum temperature based on the torque, wear and wheels speed information and determines whether there is a discrepancy between the expected temperature and the measured temperature, and between the braking demand and the measured torque; the controller generates one of three different alerts if there is a discrepancy in the temperature, torque or both. A temperature discrepancy may indicate faults relating to brake components such as a ruptured brake disc or hydraulic failure; a torque discrepancy may indicate faults relating to failure or incorrect operation of sensors, a discrepancy in both temperature and torque may indicate faults relating to a torque sensor. The controller may utilise predefined temperature discrepancy thresholds, from brake calibration data, and compare measured values from several consecutive flight cycles in its determination. A claim for an aircraft with sensors and the controller, and a method for detecting and diagnosing faults with an aircraft braking system are included.
