Methods and apparatus are disclosed for authentication of mobile devices for vehicle communication. A method for mobile device authentication for vehicle communication comprises: receiving a signal on a mobile device that is associated with a vehicle; determining, via a processor, whether an application for accessing a key is active on the mobile device; activating the application utilizing the signal in response to determining the application is inactive; accessing the key via the application; and sending the key to the vehicle via a communication module. The mobile device may comprise a key accessor. The key accessor activates, in response to determining the application is inactive, the application utilizing the signal. The key accessor also accesses a key via the application and sends, via the communication module, the key to the vehicle. The key may be accessed from a database. The received signal may be a low energy beacon and the communications module may be a short-range wireless module. The application may be started and the key sent when the mobile device is locked. The invention allows a mobile device to act as a passive entry passive start key fob even if the relevant application is not operating.
