A vehicle steering wheel and rack (202, fig 2) are synchronized while mechanically decoupled by, turning the rack lock-to-lock (A,B, fig 3) to determine a steering rack midpoint; turning the wheel from lock-to-lock to determine a steering wheel midpoint angular position; then synchronizing the rack with the wheel based on the steering rack midpoint and the steering wheel midpoint. Decoupling may be by a clutch while driving autonomously, with synchronization when switching to occupant pilot mode. The rack or wheel may lose calibration by loss of power. Re-calibration can be directed by a controller using motors or instructing the occupant.
