A method of minimizing damage severity to a vehicle, the method comprises determining two or more paths of available paths for a vehicle 202 that each include a predicted impact with an object 204, e.g. a stationary vehicle, barriers, railings etc., determining a time to impact, vehicle speed and direction, i.e. speed vector 210, 208 and object 204 speed and direction. The method further involves determining an object type, such as another vehicle or a barrier, and determining a best path of the two or more vehicle paths by determining damage severity based on time to impact, vehicle speed and direction and object speed and direction. The method controls one or more of steering, propulsive torque and braking torque to pilot the vehicle on the best path based on the damage severity. Damage severity may also be based on kinetic energy for the vehicle 202 at time of impact. Reference is also made to a system comprising a computer programmed to perform the method and to a vehicle having the computer.
