A vehicle 10 includes systems for adjusting window 12 transmittance. A camera (26c see fig 2) is provided for obtaining images of an occupant. An artificial neural network runs on computer hardware carried on-board the vehicle. The artificial neural network is trained to classify the occupant using the images captured by the camera (26c) as input. A controller 14 varies the transmittance of the one or more windows 12 based on classifications made by the artificial neural network. For example, if the artificial neural network classifies the occupant as squinting or shading his or her eyes with a hand, the controller helpfully reduces the transmittance of a windshield and/or of a side window. Skin pigmentation and inputs from an ambient light sensor may be taken into account. Sensing may also be provided via photovoltaic components 24. Adjustment is typically made via an electrochromic layer 22 associated with a laminated glass window 12.
