A host vehicles 60 arrival time at an intersection is determined and intersection arrival data is received via vehicle-to-vehicle communications from one or more secondary vehicles 65. Priority is assigned to each of the secondary vehicles based on the intersection arrival data and one of the secondary vehicles is identified as an immediately preceding vehicle. Upon receiving a ready signal clearance from the immediately preceding vehicle, the computer actuates a powertrain of the host vehicle, causing the host vehicle to proceed through the intersection. The intersection arrival data may be received directly from the one or more secondary vehicles and may further comprise a unique vehicle identification and arrival time for each of the secondary vehicles. The arrival time may be defined as when the host vehicle initially stops in a queue 61, at a first position 62 of the intersection, or at a predetermined distance from the intersection. The ready signal clearance could be sent when the host vehicle has travelled a predetermined distance after actuating its powertrain, this signal may be an omission of a transmitted signal.
