The method includes energising one or more vehicle electrical systems with a first power source 302, such as a 12V battery, and determining a first voltage of that power source 304. A second voltage of a second power source is determined 306 and if a combination of the first and second voltages is within tolerance of a predetermined voltage then the health and integrity of the battery is deemed good 308. The determination may be based on the battery performance under fault conditions such as the failure of the other source which may be simulated by de-energising that source. The electrical systems may include three phase motors with current vectors and systems with non-torque producing current vectors including DC-DC convertors (222,224 fig.2) and safety critical systems related to steering, braking and powertrain (114,113,112 fig.1). Loads, which may include non-safety critical systems may be turned off but if they are energised the safety critical systems may be prevented from operating.
