The tramway system has one or more steel rail tracks with one or more adjacent natural gas supply ports 72; one or more trams 10 travel on the tracks each having a flywheel to store energy and an engine 18; a compressor 62 compresses methane gas supplied to an inlet duct 61 with a valve (fig.5,84) to be stored in one or more pressurised containers 60. The gas supply port may have an electrically activated valve 70, such as an electromagnetic ball valve, which only permits gas flow when the port is connected and sealed to the inlet duct of a tram. Stationary compressors 66 may pressurise gas from a mains supply 65 to be stored in a stationary storage tanks 68 at a pressure suitable for use on the trams, the trams container 60 may store the gas at up to 20MPa. A claim for the tram is also included.
