Disclosed is a method of controlling the deployment state of a side-view mirror by determining one or more first rates of fuel consumption and deploying one or more side-view mirrors. One or more second rates of fuel consumption are then determined and one or more deployment states of the side-view mirror are controlled based on the first rates of fuel consumption and the second rates of fuel consumption. It is expected that there will be a predetermined difference D in the rate fuel consumption between deployed and non-deployed states. If this difference does not equal the predetermined amount this suggests that the mirror is incorrectly deployed. This may occur if the mirrors are iced and thus the method may include controlling deicing of the mirrors based upon the fuel consumption rates. The fuel consumption rates may be filtered to reduce noise, for instance by taking an average rate over time. Also disclosed are computer-readable medium/processor & memory with executable instructions which execute the method.
