A sound 190 from an impact between a tyre of a host vehicle 100 and a set of protrusions 185 in a roadway 170 is used to determine a lane 175 in which the vehicle is travelling. A communication 195 is received from a target vehicle 180 identifying a roadway lane and possibly the direction of travel of the target vehicle and the lane of the host vehicle is compared to the lane of the target vehicle. A vehicle subsystem is controlled in accordance with the communication based at least in part on whether the roadway lane of the host vehicle is the same as the roadway lane of the target vehicle. The communication of the target vehicle may be ignored if it is determined that the target vehicle is travelling in a different direction and/or in a different lane in order to reduce the computational overhead of the host vehicle.
