A method and system for actuating an aircraft component 100 such as a rain gutter, vortex generator or NACA duct by use of an actuating material 200, such as an electro-active polymer, which undergoes deformation in response to the application of an electrical signal, and which generates an electrical signal in response to deformation of the material, wherein an activation input signal 202 is applied to the material, to cause a desired deformation, and actuating the component, and then the actuating material generating an output signal 206 in response, indicating the actual deformation of the component. The desired deformation may serve to alter an air gap between the aircraft component (504, fig. 5) and a moveable control surface (500, fig. 5), such as a trailing edge flap of an aircraft.
